Automatic updates

Last updated Screenshots show Folora 0.2.0.

Folora checks for a new version about 3 seconds after the window appears, then every 4 hours. When a new version is available, Folora shows a notice in the notification bar; the update is installed only after you click Update.

When a new version is available

The notification bar shows “Folora 0.2.0 is ready to install” with Update and Later. If the server provides release notes, What’s new also appears and opens the notes page in your browser.

Clicking Later only dismisses the notice; “↑ 0.2.0” stays at the right end of the status bar. The notice does not appear again for the same version while Folora is running, and appears again after Folora restarts.

Install an update

  1. Click Update in the notification bar, “↑ 0.2.0” in the status bar, or Update under About Folora at the bottom of Settings.
  2. Folora first saves documents that have unsaved changes and records the current windows and tabs. Untitled documents are already in the recovery log and do not need to be saved separately.
  3. During the download, the notification bar shows “Downloading update… 12 / 29 MB” and the status bar shows a percentage.
  4. During installation, “Installing update…” appears. When installation finishes, Folora restarts automatically and brings back the same windows and tabs.

Check manually

You can check immediately from any of these three places:

  • Check for Updates… below About Folora in the Folora menu
  • Check for updates in the command palette
  • Check for updates at the bottom of Settings

The result, “Folora is up to date (0.2.0)” or “Couldn’t reach the update server”, disappears automatically after 3 seconds.

Update failures

  • If a document cannot be saved, the notification bar shows “Update failed: “…” could not be saved: …” with the file name and the reason, and nothing is downloaded.
  • If the download or installation fails, the notification bar shows “Update failed” with the reason and offers Retry and Download manually. Download manually opens the folora.ai download page in your browser.

Notes

  • If an automatic check fails, for example when the Mac is offline or the check times out, no message is shown.
  • There is no setting to turn off automatic checks, and no option to skip a version.
  • With several windows open, clicking Update saves only the documents in that window. Unsaved changes in other windows stay in the recovery log and come back after the restart, but they are not written back to the files.
