AI writing assistant

The AI writing assistant is off by default. When it is on, Folora sends the selected text to the model service you set up, and the result is applied to the document only after you review it.

Setup

  1. Open Settings (⌘,), expand AI settings and select Enable AI (off by default).
  2. In Base URL, enter the address including the API prefix, for example one ending in /v1. Folora appends /chat/completions.
  3. In Model name, enter the model name the service provides.
  4. If the service needs a key, enter it in API key. For a local service, leave it blank.
  5. Click Save AI settings.

The key is stored in the macOS Keychain. After you change the Base URL, enter the key again.

Use

  1. Select text, then choose AI writing assistant from the Edit menu, More actions (⋯) or the command palette.
  2. Send is set to Selected text only by default. To send the entire document, you must explicitly choose Entire document (explicit consent).
  3. Under Action, choose Polish, Shorten, Summarize, Translate or Custom. Translate requires a Target language; Custom requires an instruction.
  4. Click Generate. The result appears as plain text, paragraph by paragraph, in AI result preview.
  5. Choose Replace original, Insert after or Copy result.

After you apply a result, one ⌘Z undoes the whole result.

AI marks

In writing view, sentences written by AI have a light background. Holding the pointer over one shows the date it was written. When you edit the text of a sentence, its mark fades; changing formatting or moving paragraphs does not affect marks. The status bar shows the share of AI text, for example “AI 12%”.

  • Marks are shown only in Folora. They are not written to the Markdown, and copies and exports do not include them.
  • If the file is changed outside Folora, all marks are cleared and the notification bar shows “AI marks cleared: this file was changed outside Folora”.
  • Show AI marks in AI settings is on by default. Deselect it to hide marks.

Notes

  • Only the Chat Completions streaming text interface is supported. The Responses API and tool calls are not supported.
  • Requests go directly from your computer to the service you set up. They do not pass through Folora’s servers.
  • If the original text changes while a result is being generated, or you click Cancel generation, the result is not applied and can only be copied.
